WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) today announced that a Muskingum County school district has been named as a finalist in the “Race to the Top- District” competition. The Maysville Local School District in Zanesville has been selected by the U.S. Department of Education as a finalist for the “Race to the Top- District” (RTTT-D) competition. Maysville Local School District is one of 31 finalists, selected from more than 200 applications nationwide.

“Teachers, parents, and students in school districts across Ohio already know what the U.S. Department of Education acknowledged today—that our state’s education system is on the rise. Zanesville is well-positioned to compete successfully in the final round of the competition for Race to the Top funding,” said Brown.  “The Race to the Top funding is critical not only for ensuring better schools for today’s young minds, but for future generations of Ohioans to come.”

According to the U.S. Department of Education, the 2013 RTTT-D program will provide nearly $120 million in funds to support locally developed plans to personalize and improve student learning, directly increase student achievement and educator effectiveness, close achievement gaps, and prepare every student for success in college and careers. The awards will be announced no later than December 31, 2013.
