WASHINGTON, D.C. – A resolution authored by U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) honoring the life of Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth cleared the Senate unanimously last night.

“When Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth arrived in Cincinnati in the early 1960s, America was a divided landscape. Access to education, jobs, and housing – and the access to America’s middle class provided by these American rights – was limited based on race. Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth helped to transform our state, the American South, and our nation into a place where all people who work hard and play by the rules can have a fair chance at living out the American Dream.

“Today, as we remember Rev. Shuttlesworth’s journey from Alabama to Cincinnati’s Avondale community, our faith in America is renewed. Rev. Shuttlesworth’s full life encourages us to continue his fight for economic justice and equality. We express our admiration for Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth by marching in his spirit rather than standing in his shadow.”

Earlier this week, Brown announced that he would introduce a resolution to honor Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth, who survived multiple murder attempts during his participation in the Freedom Movement in the 1960s, including numerous bomb attacks on his home and church prior to moving to Cincinnati. He was pastor at Cincinnati’s Greater New Light Baptist Church.
