WASHINGTON, D.C. –U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) today issued the following statement after the U.S. Department of Energy announced that it would end operations of the American Centrifuge Project at the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant in Piketon, Ohio.

“We know this plant is critical to southeast Ohio’s economy and important to keeping our nation safe and secure for generations to come. We’ve overcome previous challenges and kept the American Centrifuge Project alive, and I will urge the Administration to reverse course on this shortsighted decision. The Department of Energy should maintain ACP while also working with the private sector and Ohio stakeholders to ensure the future, commercial viability of the facility.”

Brown has been a champion of the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant, the American Centrifuge Project, and decontamination and decommissioning (D&D) operations.
