Sen. Brown Calls on ValleyCare to Reach Fair Agreement with More Than 400 Local Nurses to Improve Jobs, Health Care for Valley Citizens

Brown Offers Aid to Help Hospital and Nurses Reach Agreement that Would Ensure Quality Health Care for Mahoning Valley Citizens, Good Jobs for Nurses

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) called on ValleyCare’s Northside Medical Center & Healthcare System to work towards a fair and equitable agreement with more than 400 of its nurses who have been without a contract since July 19, 2012. Brown’s staff recently met with the Ohio Nurses Association (ONA) to discuss the quality of care that the hospital provides the Mahoning Valley and the rights of its nurses.

“I urge ValleyCare to work towards reaching a fair and equitable agreement with more than 400 of its nurses,” Brown said. “Mahoning Valley workers deserve good wages and working conditions. And Mahoning Valley citizens deserve high quality health care. A negotiated and ratified contract will benefit the workers and their families, the hospital management, and the local community. That is why I gladly offer my assistance so that both sides can reach an agreement.”

Brown’s letter to the Northside Medical Center & Healthcare System can be read in its entirety below:

Kirk Ray, CEO

Northside Medical Center & Healthcare System

ValleyCare Health System of Ohio

Dear Mr. Ray:

I write to you on behalf of more than 400 nurses who are employed by Northside Medical Center & Healthcare System and represented by the Ohio Nurses Association. My staff recently met with a group of these nurses and listened to their deep concerns about their jobs, the quality of care at the hospital, and the health of the entire Youngstown community.

As you know, collective bargaining rights, which are protected by the laws of our country, give both a company and a union the opportunity to resolve differences at the bargaining table. Compromise is what the collective bargaining process is all about.  It is in this spirit that I ask that you and your staff work diligently towards a fair and equitable agreement that allows the nurses to continue providing the high quality of care they have performed for so many years.

An agreement between the hospital and the union will benefit the workers, their families, the hospital management, and the entire Youngstown community. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if I or my staff can help bring an end to this dispute.  I stand ready to help both sides reach a fair resolution to this matter.

Sincerely,

Sherrod Brown

United States Senator
