WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) released the following statement in response to this evening’s State of the Union address. Earlier today, Brown called for Congress to strengthen our economy by expanding the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) to low-income workers without children – the only class of Americans currently taxed into poverty.

At the State of the Union this evening, Brown was joined by Jason Jacobs, a Cincinnati-area worker who would benefit from Brown’s plan to extend EITC benefits to childless workers. Jacobs, who currently makes $9 dollars an hour, will continue to be taxed into poverty if EITC is not expanded.

“Tonight, President Obama made it clear that we must not reverse course on our nation’s 58 straight months of private sector job growth,” Brown said. “We must continue to build on this momentum while ensuring that more Americans can get ahead. We do that by growing our economy in ways that make it possible for everyone – regardless of their zip code – to succeed. I look forward to working with my Republican and Democratic colleagues and the President to achieve these goals. ”
