Area lawmakers divided on bailout plan

Reaction from 'hurry up' to 'stop'

WASHINGTON - Northern Kentucky and Greater Cincinnati lawmakers had mixed reactions Monday over the unprecedented $700 billion bailout proposal for failing financial institutions.

Some, such as Sens. Jim Bunning of Kentucky, a Republican member of the banking committee, and Sherrod Brown of Ohio, a Democrat on the banking committee, were outraged.

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell and House GOP leader John Boehner, however, urged swift passage.

"When there's a fire in your kitchen threatening to burn down your home, you don't want someone stopping the firefighters on the way and demanding they hand out smoke detectors first," McConnell told fellow lawmakers on the Senate floor Monday.
