Most people probably think wrestlers are supposed to be strong and be able to lift things up, but a group of wrestlers who train in Columbus said they needed a U.S. Senator — and the federal government — to lift their cause high enough for people to hear it.
Senator Sherrod Brown spoke today at the Ohio Regional Training Center in Columbus urging the International Olympic Committee to rescind its decision to knock wrestling out of the Olympics after the 2016 games in Rio de Janeiro. Lou Rosselli, the center’s head coach, said Brown’s efforts lifted the cause “up on a platform.”
“Wrestling in America is huge,” Rosselli said at a news event today.
That theme, which Brown echoed, seemed to set the tone for the event.
The Democrat from Ohio called the decision puzzling, adding that the IOC’s vote last month would hurt the state because high school and college students who love wrestling aspire to make it to the Olympics.
