According to Sen. Sherrod Brown, 735 Van Wert County families missed out on a total of $1.4 million in tax credit for college tuition paid in 2009. Now, he wants to be sure that every family that qualifies gets the credit.

"Created through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the American Opportunity Tax Credit (AOTC) is designed to provide middle class tax credit during the tax years of 2009 and 2010," Brown stated during a teleconference on Wednesday. "It was called the Hope Tax Credit then, but now we've expanded it and basically redone it and extended it. So the American Opportunity Tax Credit will improve existing credits to help make college more affordable for middle class and working class families."
