During their years in the U.S. House of Representatives, Republican David L. Hobson and Democrat Sherrod Brown of Ohio would never have been regarded by anyone as good buddies.

But as Hobson, a congressman from Springfield since 1991, left the House on Wednesday, Brown, now a U.S. senator, praised Hobson as "one of the most effective members of the U.S. House of Representatives." Brown made those comments in letters he wrote to newspapers across Hobson's district.

"His quiet style of leadership -- working across party lines -- served his district and Ohio well," Brown wrote. "No one worked more effectively than Hobson in protecting jobs at the National Air and Space Intelligence Center at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (in Dayton). ... Without Dave Hobson, the Air Force base's future would not be nearly so bright."
