WASHINGTON - Sen. Sherrod Brown has won a seat on the Senate Appropriations Committee, a move that will give him greater say in steering federal money to Ohio.

The Democrat from northern Ohio was named to the panel yesterday by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., to fill the seat left vacant by the death this month of Sen. Robert Byrd, D-W. Va.

The committee approves all federal spending for programs that are authorized annually, such as defense, education, housing and transportation. Those holding the coveted seats have sweeping powers to have federal money spent on their favorite projects in their states.
