MANSFIELD -- Mansfield could qualify for targeted federal grants to revitalize blighted neighborhoods saturated with abandoned housing, under a bill recently introduced in Congress, U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown said this week.

The Community Regeneration, Sustainability and Innovation Act of 2009 is sponsored by Brown, a Mansfield native, and U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan, D-Ohio.

The proposed federal program would provide $500 million over three years, targeted toward cities containing high numbers of vacant or abandoned properties, due to long-term losses in population or jobs.
