WASHINGTON — The Justice Department has created task forces in Columbus and Cleveland to help investigate the use of prescription painkillers.

The two task forces, which the government began setting up at the end of last year, are called tactical-diversion squads and include agents from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. The Columbus office will have four DEA officials and as many as six state or local officers.

Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, pressed the Justice Department to establish the task forces after he learned that the government had set up similar units in other states.

“It’s clear that Ohio needs all the resources it can get to combat pain pill trafficking,” Brown said in a statement.
