DOYLESTOWN -- A Wayne County resident was one of nearly 30 northeast Ohio veterans to receive war medals at a presentation ceremony on Saturday.
At the ceremony at the Summit County Veterans Service Commission in Akron, U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown presented overdue and replacement medals to the veterans, including Vietnam War veteran Dale Lindsey of Doylestown.
Lindsey received the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars, the Marksman Badge with Rifle Bar, the Valorous Unit Award, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with "60" Device, the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation with Palm Device and Republic of Vietnam Civil Actions Honor Medal Unit Citation, First Class.
Lindsey enlisted in the United States Army in May 1970 and saw action in Vietnam in Laos. Following two years of active service, he remained in the Army Reserves until he was discharged in May 1976.
Lindsey said when he returned home from Vietnam at age 20, he wasn't aware he had earned medals, and it wasn't something he thought about at the time anyway.
It wasn't until recently when Brown was representing him on a service disability claim he learned of the medals.
