That’s the assessment of the statewide Children’s Hunger Alliance, which will recognize the Ashtabula County Children Services Summer Foods Program at the alliance’s 16th annual Menu of Hope luncheon in Columbus on Feb. 15.

Cheryl Edwards, community services coordinator for the Ashtabula County Children Services Board, said the non-profit alliance announced last week that the local program has been selected as the “outstanding” lunch program out of the 224 summer foods programs in Ohio last year.

Ashtabula County’s program is the only one sponsored by a Children Services Board. School districts, faith-based programs, recreation programs and non-profit groups typically sponsor the program.

Nevertheless, Edwards said the nutrition program is a good match for Children Services’ mission of “protecting and nurturing” children. Children receive nutritious meals five days a week while their parents get some financial relief on the food budget.
