Made in America

MARIETTA-After the U.S. Senate adopted a bill to require the government to buy flags made in the United States, many local governments report they use flags that are made in the U.S.

They also report they buy their flags from the same source, a store on Front Street in Marietta, American Flag and Poles.

Sylvi Caporale, co-owner, said all of the American and state flags they sell are made in the United States of America.

"Most of our U.S. flags come from a facility in Chicago while others come from a plant in Richmond, Va., and others from Milwaukee, Wis.," she said. "We have more than 30 different sizes of the U.S. flag and they are all made in the U.S."

Caporale said many local governments buy flags from her store and she said customers know the store is the place to find flags that are not imports.

"Many people here already know us," she said. "They trust us and they know we have flags made in the U.S. Many times they will make a purchase, and as if they forgot, they ask if the flag is U.S. made."

Caporale said the flags from the U.S. are generally better quality than those from other parts of the world.

"It's all a matter of quality," she said. "The flags we sell are able to withstand the weather. Whether they are sown or prints they are better. You may find some flags at a low price but they are not good quality and they are imports."

On Thursday the bill co-sponsored by U.S. Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., was passed and it forbids the federal government to buy U.S. flags that are imported.

Rockefeller said Thursday in a news release the legislation is part of his ongoing effort to promote American manufacturing jobs. Earlier this year, Rockefeller held a series of roundtables across the state on how to boost West Virginia's manufacturing sector. He says he plans to hold more roundtables.

Vienna Mayor Dave Nohe said all the flags flown in the city are domestic.

"All of our flags are made in U.S.A.," he said. "We buy them in bulk about a year ahead of time and we are careful to make sure they are made in the U.S.A."

Nohe said he agreed with the measure.
