Massillon woman presented with father's WWII medals

CANTON -- A Massillon woman was presented with six medals on behalf of her father, a World War II veteran, this week.

Margaret Ledrich, of Massillon, received the medals on behalf of her late father, Marion Neiger, at the Stark County Veterans Services Commission on Tuesday.

Neiger, a native of New Philadelphia, entered the Navy in 1943 at the age of 20. He served as a coxswain on the USS New Jersey, and saw action in the Pacific Theater. He was honorably discharged on June 11, 1945, and returned to Ohio.  

He earned the World War II Victory Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with two silver stars, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Philippine Liberation Medal with two bronze stars, and the Philippine Presidential Unit Citation.
