LORAIN — The first National Association for Black Veterans Chapter in Northeastern Ohio will open its doors in Lorain on Thursday with a ceremony and dinner at 7 p.m. at Club Our Space, 201 E. 29th St.

President of the new chapter will be Samuel L. Felton Jr., of Lorain, a Vietnam War veteran and recipient of the Navy Cross, the Navy’s highest honor, and just a step below the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest military honor.

Vice president will be Jose Lind, of Lorain, a veteran of Operation Desert Storm. Lind said the chapter already has 27 members.

The local Black Veterans Chapter will concentrate more on helping veterans and less on socializing, Lind noted.

“The homeless count is growing steadily,” Lind said. “One of every three homeless people are veterans. We hope to address those problems.”
