WASHINGTON — Sen. Rob Portman is leading a letter to the Army Corps of Engineers urging them to fully pay for Lake Erie projects, including the stopping of Asian carp.

The Ohio Republican, who co-chairs the Senate Great Lakes Task Force with Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., led the letter, which was signed by members of the task force including Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio.

The letter, to R.D. James, assistant secretary of the Army, requests, among other things, that the Army Corps complete the Brandon Road Lock and Dam Chief’s Report and begin work on a solution to prevent Asian carp from entering the Great Lakes. The invasive species have the potential to threaten the Lakes’ native species and upend the fishing industry in the region.
