NEWARK -- Sen. Sherrod Brown credited Newark with building the police department necessary to obtain grants during a Thursday press conference.

Earlier this month, Newark officials announced they had received a $420,000 COPS Hiring Program Grant to pay for two police officers, including benefits, for three years.

"Newark received the money, in part because Newark has shown they know how to use COPS grant money," Brown said.

He said he was not trying to take credit for the grant, and his interest stems from seminars he used to conduct with cities to help them figure out how to apply for funding.
