WOOSTER -- An aide for Sen. Sherrod Brown experienced the diverse landscape that is Wayne County agriculture during a roundtable with area farmers at the Shisler Center on Monday.

The roundtable provided Katharine Ferguson, a rural policy adviser for Brown, an Avon Lake Democrat, an opportunity to talk about what could potentially be coming in the upcoming farm bill and to hear what was of concern to area farmers.

Right now, things are unclear, she said. About 70 percent of the farm bill deals with nutrition programs that affect about 40 million people, and Brown will not touch them, she said. Generally, the bill takes a year or more to write, and this one could be done in a matter of weeks, she said.

Also a factor is budget cuts. Two proposals, one from the Gang of Six senators and the other from the U.S. House of Representatives, contain significant cuts. One of the figures tossed around is $11 billion.
