WASHINGTON — During ordinary economic times, this might be a footnote. But now, a new assignment for U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown on the Senate Banking Committee means the Ohio Democrat will have oversight of economically crucial institutions during a critical time.

Brown has been named head of the Senate Banking Committee's Subcommittee on Economic Policy.

The subcommittee oversees economic growth, employment and price stability, and reviews monetary policy.
