Steel union calls on city, national officials for help

LORAIN — In a bid to help restore declining steel orders from the U.S. Steel Lorain Tubular Operation to Republic Engineered Products, local union leadership has contacted elected officials from both city and national levels.

Don Golden, president of United Steel Workers Local 1104, sent letters Nov. 6 to Lorain Mayor Anthony Krasienko, Ohio Rep. Joe Koziura, D-56, U.S. Rep. Betty Sutton and Sen. Sherrod Brown. Local 1104 represents about 1,500 workers at the U.S. Steel and Republic Engineered facilities, which operate as neighbors at the 28th Street steel mill.

Last week, Republic Engineered Products announced it would be shutting down its blast furnace in December, a move which would cause 300 to 400 Lorain steel workers to be laid off, according to Ken Braun, a spokesman for the Fairlawn-based company. Demand for steel is slowing nationwide, Braun said.
