The Ross County Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) Coalition is hoping to help locals realize their full credit potential on their 2008 tax returns.

Sen. Sherrod Brown's office released figures that nearly 14,000 Ross County residents who were eligible for the EITC did not apply for it last year. Friday was a national awareness day of the credit which annually puts $43 billion in the hands of more than 22 million low-wage workers, according to the Internal Revenue System.

"This year, more than any year in the past, I think it's important for every person to get any credit they can because of the economic downturn ... People need the money and it really is a good feeling (to help)," said Wayne McLaughlin, coalition member.

Last year, the EITC coalition was created in Ross County to help those making less than $54,000 a year complete and file their tax returns. With three times fewer volunteers in place this year, the coalition completed more than 500 returns. The aim of the services, which are provided free via volunteers, is to help moderate- to low-income workers find tax credits they qualify for, said Mary Elsass, coalition member.
