WEST SALEM -- With small businesses struggling to access the credit they need to grow, a local bank received $2.3 million through the Small Business Lending Fund.

U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown announced in September that Community Independent Bancorp in West Salem will receive funding to increase its lending to small businesses.

"Small businesses are engines of job creation and will lead our state's economic recovery," Brown said. "This latest round of SBLF funding will help West Salem's Community Independent Bancorp partner with our small businesses to unlock critical capital to create jobs and drive our economy forward."

Marlene Barkheimer, president/CEO of Community Independent Bancorp, said one of the main focuses for the bank is to provide funding, loans and assistance to local small businesses. Barkheimer said when the bank applied for the funding, it identified several local businesses that would benefit.
