More than 787,000 Ohio school children benefit from free and reduced price meals during the school year, but less than 10 percent of them take advantage of similar summer nutrition programs, says Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio.

Brown held a conference call with reporters today to push for more participation by families and children in the summer nutrition programs. Brown is on the Senate Agriculture Committee's subcommittee on hunger and nutrition, and has been advocating for legislation to reduce the bureaucracy involved in certifying children as eligible for free and reduced-priced meals, a proposal that has been included in a broader Senate anti-hunger bill.
