WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) announced that the United States Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has awarded four grants to city governments, county governments, and universities in southeast Ohio, totaling more than $2 million. The funds will be used to help make necessary repairs to airports and their critical infrastructure.

“Ohio airports are vital infrastructure supporting travel and commerce in our state,” said Brown. “These investments will provide Southeast Ohio airports with the resources they need to ensure the safety of their passengers and support the local economy for years to come.”

DOT funds include:

  • $1,830,330 grant to the Scioto County Airport Authority & County Commissioners to fund the design phase of rehabilitating a runway to maintain structural integrity of the pavement, and install drainage to protect the pavement from deterioration at Greater Portsmouth Regional Airport.
  • $80,000 grant to the City of New Philadelphia to reconstruct the existing airport rotating beacon at Harry Clever Field Airport.
  • $137,000 grant to Ohio University to fund the design phase of rehabilitating runway pavement markings and strengthening the main apron to accommodate a heavier class of aircraft at Ohio University Airport.
  • $164,480 grant to the Vinton County Commissioners to install drainage improvements to handle storm water runoff at Vinton County Airport.

The FAA supports public-use airports included in the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems (NPIAS) through the Airport Improvement Program. The program supports projects that improve airport safety, capacity, security and environmental impact. More information about the FAA’s Airport Improvement Program can be found here.
