WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) announced the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) is investing more than $2.6 million in the Southwest Ohio Regional Transit Authority (SORTA) to help them purchase new buses to modernize their current bus system. Brown wrote a letter in support of federal funding for SORTA.

“Ohio riders rely on buses to take them to work, school, or appointments and then to take them back home again,” said Brown. “By investing in Ohio bus systems, we can improve service for riders and help Ohioans access safe and reliable transportation.”

DOT’s investment will help SORTA buy new buses and modernize the bus fleet in order to reduce maintenance costs and better serve southwest Ohio riders.

Brown – who serves as the ranking member of the U.S. Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee, which oversees DOT’s Federal Transit Administration – has championed federal investment to modernize bus facilities and replace outdated buses.  SORTA was awarded the funding through the DOT’s Buses and Bus Facilities competitive grant program, which Brown secured in the long-term transportation infrastructure bill signed into law in December 2015.
