WASHINGTON, D.C. – Following today’s hearing before the Senate Finance Committee, U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) announced he will vote against Steven Mnuchin for U.S. Treasury Secretary.

Brown, who serves as Ranking Member on the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee, questioned Mnuchin today about his leadership of a bank that has been called a “foreclosure machine” because of predatory practices that wrongfully kicked servicemembers, seniors, and working families out of their homes. Brown also pressed Mnuchin on his business relationships with Chinese investors and the Chinese government, and his commitment to Ohioans whose pensions are under threat.

“Working people need a Treasury Secretary who will work for them, not Wall Street. Mr. Mnuchin’s cozy ties to Wall Street raise serious red flags that demand serious answers. Instead, he failed to answer critical questions about the fortune he made while military servicemembers, seniors, and working families got kicked out of their homes,” Brown said. “The Treasury Secretary will play an important role in fulfilling President-elect Trump’s promise to crack down on China, and nothing Mr. Mnuchin said today convinced me that he’s up to the task.”

Brown gave Mnuchin the opportunity to answer important questions about key Wall Street rules and housing issues in a letter Brown sent nearly a month ago. Mnuchin has yet to respond.
