WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) today announced that Ohio is to receive more than $3.6 million in competitive grants and administrative supplements for biomedical research and research training in Ohio institutions of higher education. The grants are awarded by the National Institute of Health (NIH) as a part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) and invest in institutions in Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Gambier and Toledo.
“These funds invest in the next generation of advanced scientific and medical research to tackle our health challenges,” Brown said. “These grants keep Ohio at the forefront of research development and stimulate new economic opportunities”
A 2008 study by the National Institute of Health approximates that each dollar invested in universities and hospitals can generate more than twice that amount. Ohio was a top-ten leader in economic activity created through NIH funding in 2007.
