WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) announced that the Reinvestment Fund’s Healthy Food Financing Initiative (HFFI) grant program has awarded a $76,600 grant to the Environmental Health Watch in Cleveland, Ohio. The grant will fund the development of the Kinsman-Central Grocery Store Cooperative Development Project, supporting strategic research and planning for the cooperatively-owned supermarket.
“Families facing food insecurity too often have limited access to healthy and nutritious foods,” said Brown. “This grant allows the Environmental Health Watch to bridge this gap, while increasing economic opportunities and innovation in Cleveland.”
Brown helped author the Healthy Food Financing Initiative in the 2014 Farm Bill and reauthorize the program in the 2018 Farm Bill. Funding for the Reinvestment Fund’s Healthy Food Financing Initiative is part of the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Rural Development program. This program supports access to healthy foods and job creation in rural and urban communities through nutritious food retail projects.
