WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) today announced the release of $7,780,003 in U.S. Department of Labor funds for YouthBuild education and training programs for disadvantaged children in low-income communities. Part of the funding was made available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
“Investing in our children is essential to ensuring the long-term economic success of Ohio,” Brown said. “This funding will allow disadvantaged children to have a place to call home, books to read, leaders to guide them, and the skills that will allow them to thrive in the future.”
To fund the program, $1,798,927 will come from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, while $5,981,076 will come from 2009 budget allocations.
The funding will be used to provide children with education and employment training, community service opportunities, and leadership skills programs. Through the funding, disadvantaged youth will then be able to give back to communities by expanding affordable housing and helping people develop education, leadership, and job skills required to work.
Brown has fought for funds that benefit communities lacking adequate financial resources in the past. In April, Brown announced $55 million in funding for community development financial institutions, which are instrumental in providing access to credit, capital, and financial services required to create jobs in underserved communities.
