WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) today announced that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has awarded $59,988 toward a University of Toledo (UT) project to improve local water quality. UT – in partnership with North Toledo community members, Vistula Management, United North, and the Toledo-Lucas County Sustainability Commission – will create a plan to install green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) at low income, multi-family housing sites in Toledo. GSI prevents untreated stormwater from entering Lake Erie and polluting the water.

“Urban communities often have aging infrastructure that contributes to stormwater runoff,” said Brown. “This collaborative effort will ensure that more neighborhoods in Toledo communities are able to utilize green infrastructure to lower water bills, protect Lake Erie, and keep their drinking water clean.”

Brown is working to help protect Ohioans’ drinking water. In September, as part of the Water Resources Development Act, the Senate passed provisions of his Clean Water Affordability Act – a bill to help communities make renovations to outdated sewer systems, while improving water quality and keeping rates affordable for residents and small business.
