WASHINGTON, DC- U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) today announced that the Senate unanimously confirmed Cathy Jones to serve as the U.S. Marshal for the Southern District of Ohio. In March 2009, Brown recommended Jones's nomination to the president.
U.S. Marshals are nominated by the President of the United States and must be confirmed by the U.S. Senate. Brown released the following statement after the vote:
"Marshal Jones' wealth of experience and commitment to serving others has uniquely prepared her for this position," said Brown. "Her diverse career in law enforcement spans nearly two decades and her current service as Acting U.S. Marshal will ensure a seamless transition. Cathy is dedicated to crime prevention and gang resistance."
Jones is currently the Acting U.S. Marshall for the Southern District. She has been a federal law enforcement professional for 18 years, and has served as Chief of the Office of Recruiting and Chief of the Gang Resistance Education and Training (GREAT) Program in the United States Marshal Service's (USMS) national office. In addition, she has held positions in the USMS offices in the Northern District of West Virginia, the Western District of Pennsylvania, the Northern District of Ohio, and the Southern District of Ohio. In 2008, she received both the Crime Stoppers Law Enforcement Officer of the Year Award and the Outstanding Performance Award from the USMS.
Brown's recommendation for the U.S. Marshal opening was based on the advice of a selection commission he assembled. Brown assembled two commissions, each comprised of a diverse group of nine community leaders and members of the legal and law enforcement communities. To prevent any conflicts of interest, commission members residing in the Southern District of Ohio reviewed applicants for the Northern District while members residing in the Northern District reviewed Southern District applicants. Each applicant completed an extensive questionnaire, financial disclosure form, and an individual interview with the commission. The Southern District commission interviewed a total of 11 candidates for U.S. Attorney and 11 candidates for U.S. Marshal. After completing interviews with all candidates, the commission made recommendations to Brown.
