WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) today issued the following statement after learning Portsmouth had been selected as one of 15 semifinalists in the “America’s Best Communities” competition – sponsored by The Weather Channel, Frontier, DISH Network, and CoBank. Portsmouth is the only Ohio community to advance to the top 15.
“Strong communities are built on hard work, helping our neighbors when they need us most, and guaranteeing a strong future for local residents, so it is no surprise that Portsmouth has gained attention as one of the best communities in the country,” said Brown. “The people of Portsmouth keep southern Ohio’s economy going and this competition will help them seek out new economic opportunities in the region. I look forward to following the Southern Ohio Port Authority and the community’s ongoing work to earn the honor of being America’s best community and am eager to help them continue to grow.”
Portsmouth’s status as an America’s Best Communities Competition semifinalist was announced during a ceremony this week. A representative of Sen. Brown’s Office attended. The competition provides economic awards to finalists throughout the competition. Portsmouth already received a $50,000 award for economic revitalization. Portsmouth will compete against 14 other communities in April in North Carolina for the opportunity to win up to $3 million.
