WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) applauded Upper Valley Family Care in Troy for its selection as one of for being named as one of the 2014 Million Hearts Hypertension Control Champions. The Troy center is being honored for its work in helping patients reduce and control high blood pressure. Million Hearts is an initiative co-led by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services that aims to prevent one million heart attacks and strokes by 2017. Each of the 30 Champions chosen nationwide received a $2000 award.

“The innovative work happening at Upper Valley Family Care is helping to save lives throughout Miami County and I applaud their success,” Brown said. “High blood pressure affects one in three Americans – putting them at higher risk of developing heart disease or stroke. By working together to help patients control high blood pressure and ensure access to preventive care, we can help Ohioans lead healthier and longer lives.”

Brown continues to fight for healthcare for Ohioans. Last week, Brown announced that 234,507 Ohioans have selected or been re-enrolled in health insurance plans through the health law’s insurance marketplace. Last year, Brown toured the state to raise awareness about the enrollment deadline. He traveled with Enroll America and held events at Columbus State Community College, Cuyahoga Community College, Wright State University in Dayton, and Eastern Gateway Community College in Youngstown, to inform residents of the local resources available to help them choose and purchase a healthcare plan. The health insurance that Ohioans are able to secure through the marketplace allows them to afford specialist care and receive preventive care that can reduce instances of hypertension and other conditions.
