WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) did not object to the spending measure to fund the government and extend miners’ health care for one week based on commitments he secured that permanent healthcare for miners will be included in the broader package next week. Brown warned that Congress must follow through on its commitment to permanently take care of the miners’ health care next week in the broader spending package that is being finalized.

“One week at a time is no way to run our government, but I agreed to this short-term patch because I’ve received assurance that we are going to take care of miners’ healthcare permanently in the final package next week,” said Brown. “But if leadership does not follow through on this commitment, they will have a huge problem on their hands, and they won’t just hear from me – they’ll have to answer to the thousands of coal miners and widows who are counting on them to keep their promise.”
