WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) joined Sens. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) and Sam Brownback (R-KS) to introduce the Drive America Forward Act (S. 1135).  Brown is an original cosponsor of this legislation that would create jobs and increase demand for cars and auto parts by providing consumers with a voucher worth up to $4,500 for the purchase or lease of a more fuel-efficient vehicle.

“This bill is about creating new demand for cars and auto parts, while also giving consumers much-needed relief,” Brown said. “Restoring the strength of the auto industry will take time, but this bill is a significant step toward getting our auto industry back on track and steering it toward a more successful future. This bipartisan legislation will complement Rep. Betty Sutton’s tireless work on ‘Cash for Clunkers,’ in the House.”

Under the bill, a consumer would be eligible to receive a voucher worth up to $4,500 to exchange an older, less fuel-efficient vehicle for the lease or purchase of a more fuel-efficient vehicle. Under the current proposal, the program would be effective for up to one year and is expected to increase demand for cars and auto parts produced and sold in Ohio.

Under the legislation, owners of passenger cars could receive vouchers if they exchange an older vehicle with 18 mpg or less for a vehicle with at least 22 mpg. Owners of small trucks or SUVs could receive vouchers if they exchange an older vehicle with 18 mpg or less for a small truck or SUV that gets an additional 2 mpg.
