WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) praised the opening of Eastern Gateway Community College today in Youngstown, Ohio. Brown is a longtime supporter of community colleges and is the author of several pieces of legislation that would support community colleges like Eastern Gateway.
“Community colleges are critical to Ohio’s economic competiveness,” Brown said. “Eastern Gateway Community College will ensure that Ohio workers are prepared for the jobs of the 21st century. Community colleges will help rebuild our nation’s middle class and I look forward to watching Eastern Gateway provide education and training for workers in the Mahoning Valley.”
Brown is the author of the Building Student Success Act of 2009 which would create a national, systemic, data-driven approach to improving student outcomes at community colleges and open enrollment institutions. This legislation, based on the “Achieving the Dream” initiative, aims to increase the percentage of students who earn degrees from Ohio’s community colleges. Brown also introduced the “Strengthening Employment Clusters to Organize Regional Success (SECTORS) Act of 2009." This bipartisan legislation would support the development of specialized workforce training programs at community colleges to meet regional workforce needs of emerging industries.
Eastern Gateway Community College is the first community college in Mahoning County and will serve Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana and Jefferson counties. Ohio has 24 community and technical colleges and 24 regional branch campuses of public state universities. These institutions enroll more than 225,000 students.
