CLEVELAND, OH – U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) today released a statement following President Trump’s announcement that he signed executive orders related to payroll tax, unemployment benefits, student loan payments, and evictions moratoriums. These meaningless PR stunts do not provide enough relief for Ohio workers and families to make up for the President’s failure to address the pandemic.

“The President has shown no leadership since day one, and now he’s trying to save face by announcing toothless Executive Orders that do nothing to help working families who are hurting due to his failures. Bragging about cutting unemployment benefits for 30 million Americans who are out of work shows just how out of touch President Trump is with the workers he’s betrayed. His payroll tax order would set up a surprise tax bill for folks down the road and drain Social Security, his housing order fails to help renters and homeowners keep roofs over their families’ heads, and his student loan deferment doesn’t provide long-term relief to borrowers drowning in student debt,” said Brown. “Instead of taking ‘no responsibility’ and walking away, President Trump needs to negotiate with Democrats in good faith – something he should have done months ago – and do his job as Americans grapple with a once-in-a-lifetime pandemic and an economic crisis he has made worse.”
