Brown Pushes for Buy America Ahead of President Trump’s Youngstown Rally

Brown is Leading Legislation to Apply Buy America to all Federal Infrastructure Projects

WARREN, OH – Today at Wheatland Tube, U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) renewed his push to ensure American steel and iron are used to build American infrastructure. Brown has spoken directly to President Trump about Buy America, and urged the President repeatedly to make Buy America a top priority. Brown was joined by Tim Feeney of Wheatland Tube.

“It’s pretty simple: American tax dollars should go toward American-made products that support American jobs. Period,” said Brown. “That’s why I’ve worked with Senator Portman on legislation to apply Buy America rules to all taxpayer-funded infrastructure and public works projects. I’ve spoken with President Trump about Buy America and I know he agrees. That’s why I’ve asked him to work with me to turn our bill into the law of the land.”

Brown has introduced legislation, supported by U.S. Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH), that would apply Buy America rules to all federally-funded infrastructure projects. Brown is urging the President to take steps to implement his bill as part of the President’s executive order announced earlier this year.

In April, President Trump signed the Buy American, Hire American EO, which, in part, works to ensure that the entire steel making process must take place in America to be considered “Buy American.” Currently the President’s executive order only requires federal agencies to disclose which projects are complying with Buy America rules and which are not. Brown is asking the President to go a step further by implementing Brown’s bill to require Buy America for all projects.

Brown’s four-point plan for NAFTA renegotiation urges the Administration to protect Buy America provisions, and the infrastructure blueprint he announced in January includes Buy America.

Brown is also a cosponsor of the Made in America Water Infrastructure Act along with U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI). President Donald Trump expressed support for the bill, which would ensure that American steel and iron are used in all projects funded by the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund.

Brown led the fight last Congress to restore Buy America provisions to the water infrastructure bill that would have permanently changed the law to require the use of American-made iron and steel products in infrastructure projects. While Buy America rules apply to some federal infrastructure programs, many taxpayer-funded projects still lack rules requiring the use of American-made products. Brown’s proposed legislation would ensure Buy America rules apply to all federally-assisted projects.
