WASHINGTON, D.C. –Today, U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) released the following statement in reaction to the summit between President Trump and North Korean President Kim Jong Un.
“We all want these negotiations to succeed, and I’m glad the President had a positive meeting with Kim Jong Un. But we’ve heard empty promises from the North Koreans before, so we must continue to hold them accountable with tough sanctions until we see proof the North Koreans are taking real steps to dismantle their nuclear weapons program,” Brown said.
Senator Brown has led efforts to bring North Korea to the table by passing tough sanctions through Congress. Brown helped pass tough, new sanctions into law in the summer of 2017. Most recently, Brown introduced another new set of sanctions named after Otto Warmbier, who lost his life after being held prisoner by the North Korean regime. That bill passed through Committee.
