WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) today made the following statement on President Barack Obama’s Fiscal Speech and deficit reduction in the United States. Sen. Brown’s statement is as follows:
“We owe it to our children and grandchildren to reduce our nation’s deficit. But we also owe it to our parents and grandparents to protect the Medicare and Social Security benefits they have earned throughout their careers.
“I’m encouraged that President Obama laid out a more realistic framework for reducing the deficit than the one proposed by House Republicans. We don’t need to dismantle Medicare as we know it to pay for more tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires. Deficit reduction will require sacrifice, but that sacrifice must be shared rather than placed squarely on the backs of seniors and working Americans.”
