WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) secured commitments from Dr. Ben Carson, President Donald Trump’s nominee to run the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), to work with Brown to address the scourge of lead hazards that have impacted Ohio families. As consideration of Carson’s nomination came to the Senate floor, Brown vowed to hold Carson to these commitments. As ranking Democrat on the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee, Brown helps oversee legislation related to housing.
“I will give Dr. Carson the benefit of the doubt because of commitments he has made to me in person and to the Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee in his testimony and written responses. These include his promises to address the scourge of lead hazards that threaten the health and futures of children in Ohio and nationwide,” said Brown. “Let me be clear: I will do everything in my power to hold Dr. Carson accountable for making good on his promises.”
Brown has worked with HUD and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to support grant programs that help address lead exposure and worked on several pieces of legislation aimed at tackling lead in drinking water and homes. The infrastructure blueprint he has put forth includes funding for the elimination of lead hazards.
