Following Brown-Led Call, Obama Administration Signs Disaster Declaration for Ohio

Sens. Brown and Portman Led Letter from Ohio Congressional Delegation Urging President Obama to Send Resources for Recovery Efforts Following Severe Storms this Summer

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Following a bipartisan call led by U.S. Sens. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) and Rob Portman (R-OH), President Obama signed a major disaster declaration for the state of Ohio. Last week, Brown and Portman, along with the Ohio Congressional delegation, sent a letter to President Obama in support of Governor John Kasich’s request for a major disaster declaration for the state of Ohio.

“This summer’s severe storms left many Ohio families and small businesses hurting,” Brown said. “This funding will help small businesses, families, and communities throughout our state while putting Ohioans to work.”

Severe storms and high winds swept across the state from June 29 to July 2, 2012, devastating Ohio communities and driving up costs for local governments dealing with debris removal, power restoration, and water distribution.

A major disaster declaration is necessary to ensure state and local authorities have necessary resources available to assist Ohioans in affected areas.

Brown and Portman were joined by Representatives Steve Austria (R-OH-7), Steve Chabot (R-OH-1), Marcia Fudge (D-OH-11), Bob Gibbs (R-OH-18), Bill Johnson (R-OH-6), Jim Jordan (R-OH-4), Marcy Kaptur (D-OH-9), Dennis Kucinich (D-OH-10), Steven LaTourette (R-OH-14), Robert Latta (R-OH-5), James Renacci (R-OH-16), Tim Ryan (D-OH-17), Jean Schmidt (R-OH-2), Steve Stivers (R-OH-15), Betty Sutton (D-OH-13), Patrick Tiberi (R-OH-12) and Michael Turner (R-OH-3).

The President

The White House

Washington, D. C.

Dear Mr. President:

We are writing in support of Governor John Kasich’s request for a major disaster declaration for the state of Ohio.  Severe storms and high winds swept across the state from June 29 to July 2, 2012.  These storms caused significant damage with debris that remains to be cleared as well as significant power outages during an extreme heat wave.

Local governments incurred significant costs for debris removal, power restoration, and water distribution.  Debris removal continues as well as repairs to municipal utilities and government facilities.  A major disaster declaration is necessary to ensure state and local authorities have necessary resources available to assist Ohioans in affected areas.

We fully support Governor Kasich’s request and urge your prompt consideration.  Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter.
