ICYMI: Brown Helps Broker Bipartisan Sanctions Agreement between House-Senate

Comprehensive Sanction Package will Hold Iran, Russia, North Korea Accountable - Brown is Ranking Member on Banking Committee, Which Has Jurisdiction over Financial Sanctions

WASHINGTON, D.C. – In case you missed it, U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) – ranking member of the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee – helped broker a bipartisan deal between the Senate and House of Representatives over the weekend to hold Iran, Russia and North Korea accountable. The House of Representatives is expected to pass the package Tuesday, and Brown is calling on the Senate to pass it soon after so it can be sent to President Trump for his signature.

The leaders of the Senate and its Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs and Foreign Relations Committees worked with the leadership of the House and its Foreign Affairs Committee to reach a deal announced Saturday morning. Brown helped lead the negotiations as part of his role as ranking member of the Senate Banking Committee, which has jurisdiction over financial sanctions.

“This tough, comprehensive sanctions bill holds North Korea and Iran accountable for their actions and sends a clear message to Moscow that the United States will not tolerate Russian attacks on democracy - from interference in our elections to aggression in Ukraine,” Brown said. “North Korea must face consequences for its nuclear weapons and missile testing program and its human rights abuses, including the despicable actions that took the life of Otto Warmbier and its continued imprisonment of American citizens. I expect swift passage of this bipartisan legislation in both the House and Senate, and I urge President Trump to sign it. ”
