WASHINGTON, D.C.—U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) met with NASA Administrator Charles Bolden today to discuss several key issues, including NASA’s utilization of the Glenn Research Center (GRC) facilities at Lewis Field and Plum Brook.

Sen. Brown and NASA Administrator Bolden“It’s clear that the Administration is committed to bolstering work at NASA Glenn,” Brown said. “Aerospace has played an incredibly important role in Ohio’s history, and I’m confident that aerospace will play an important role in our future, too. I was pleased to meet with Administrator Bolden today to discuss a number of important Ohio issues, including the future of NASA Glenn. NASA Glenn helps bring economic development and jobs to northern Ohio, and I will always fight to bring new missions and jobs to our state.”

Brown recently praised the President’s budget proposal for Fiscal Year 2012, calling the proposal a “big win” for GRC. GRC’s budget will increase by more than $100 million for FY2012. NASA Glenn will run the Space Technology Research Grants Program Office and will now manage two critical technology demonstration missions: Solar Electric Propulsion and Cryogenic Propulsion Storage and Transfer. Glenn will also manage the following projects:

  • In-Space Propulsion
  • Space Power Generation & Storage
  • Nuclear Systems
  • Nanotechnology
  • Manufacturing Innovation

Brown has been a leader in Congressional efforts to save jobs at NASA Glenn. Thanks to Brown, a Senate bill passed last year preserved civil servant jobs at GRC for the next three years. In February, Brown helped lead an effort to defeat an attempt to eliminate aeronautics research and development from NASA’s mission.
