SEN. BROWN ANNOUNCES MORE THAN $470,000 TO HIRE FIREFIGHTERS IN STARK COUNTY

FY 2014 Funding Will Provide Funding for Recruitment and Retention of First Responders in North Lawrence

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) today announced that North Lawrence Volunteer Fire Department has been awarded $470,232 for staffing by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) – Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Program.

“Firefighters put their lives on the line each day to keep our communities safe. These new federal resources will help ensure that North Lawrence has the skilled responders and updated resources they need to safely do their jobs,” Brown said. “With so many communities already facing budget shortfalls, critical federal efforts like AFG and SAFER are pivotal in keeping our Ohio cities, towns, and villages safe.”

The North Lawrence Volunteer Fire Department was awarded this funding as part of round 2 of the competitive Fiscal Year 2014 AFG – SAFER program announcements.

The SAFER grant program supports the hiring of firefighters and the recruitment and retention of volunteer firefighters. More information about the program can be found here.
