WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) today announced that the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) has awarded $250,000 to the City of Marietta for the Marietta Wastewater Treatment Plant Phase 3 Renovation. The grant will enable the City of Marietta to provide sewer service to 2,160 new households in Reno, Oak Grove, and Devola, while helping to improve service for 816 businesses and 6,050 existing households.

“Water and sewer improvements help individual households while also attracting and retaining jobs,” Brown said. “Proper water management is critical to the infrastructure of Ohio communities and their ability to be economically competitive. This funding will help improve service for rural customers and improve access to quality water in Washington County.”

Households in Reno, Oak Grove, and Devola do not currently have sewer service and must instead rely on home sewage treatment systems – which can pose a threat to human health and leak e-coli and other bacteria into ground and surface water. In addition to providing sewer service to these communities, the project will also fund renovations to improve the reliability of the City of Marietta water system and to increase efficiency and capacity.
