WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) today announced that the former GM Moraine site will receive $25.8 million for GM plant site cleanup as a result of an agreement worked out between the former General Motors (now known as Motors Liquidation Company or MLC) and the State of Ohio.

“These funds will help transform contaminated Brownfields into opportunities for redevelopment and new growth, which is critical for the economic rebirth of Moraine and southwest Ohio,” Brown said. “I commend Governor Strickland and Attorney General Cordray for their hard work in negotiating this agreement and for ensuring that the former General Motors company upholds its commitment to our state.”

Sen. Brown is working with MLC and the Ohio Department of Development to secure a redeveloper that will restore the site’s status as a major employer. The City of Moraine, the State of Ohio, and the federal government will approve any potential bids and are aiming to close in early 2011.

In total, MLC committed $773 million to fourteen states and the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe for 89 site cleanups. Approximately two-thirds of the sites are known to be contaminated with hazardous waste.
