Sen. Brown Announces More Than $22 Million to Support Development of Affordable Housing for Elderly, Disabled Ohioans

Funds will Help Secure Housing for Elderly and Persons with Disabilities While Promoting Economic Development in Clermont, Fayette, Franklin, Summit and Warren Counties

WASHINGTON D.C. - U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) today announced that $22,317,400 has been awarded to Ohio housing services by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's (HUD) Section 202 and Section 811 programs. The funds will help develop, construct, or rehabilitate housing for seniors on a fixed income and Ohioans with disabilities. The funding will provide interest-free capital advances to non-profit developers so they can produce accessible housing, offer rental assistance, and provide supportive services for the elderly and persons with disabilities.

"Ohio has been hit hard by the foreclosure crisis," said Sen. Brown. "Our economy and our communities cannot recover until every Ohioan has a place that he or she can call home.  This critical investment addresses the urgent need for affordable housing, while creating construction and development jobs and promoting economic development."

The Section 202 Supportive Housing for the Elderly program is the only HUD program that currently provides housing exclusively for elderly households. The program makes capital grants and project rental assistance available to developers so that they can build housing that is affordable to very low-income elderly households.

The Section 811 Supportive Housing for Persons with Disabilities program is administered by HUD and funds permanent supportive housing for very low-income persons with disabilities. Section 811 capital grants can be used for construction, rehabilitation, or acquisition of buildings to be used as housing for persons with disabilities. The Section 811 program also distributes tenant-based vouchers-sometimes referred to as "mainstream vouchers"-that can be used by eligible tenants to rent housing in the private market.
